BRING & BUY SALE 2nd September

This is your opportunity to dispose of all that photographic gear that is taking up space in the back of that cupboard. Not only photographic items but any gadgets or paraphernalia that might attract a buyer. To make the evening interesting we need plenty of stuff (but not bric-abrac).

The object is to raise funds for the club and, hopefully, for you to dispose of unwanted items. Items can be disposed of in one of two ways:-

1. ltems can be donated to the club. Attach a label (securely) giving your name, and stating 'DONATED' and giving a suggested value. The whole proceeds will go to club funds and should the buyer wish to haggle the 'CASHIER' will decide what is acceptable.

2. ltems may be sold by the owner and the CLUB will deduct 10% commission. Attach a label giving your name and a suggested value. lf the buyer wishes to haggle this should be negotiated with the seller. Once a price has been agreed, mark the label with the agreed price and take the label and the total cash to the'CASHIER'

3. At the end of the evening the 'CASHIER' will distribute the funds collected as appropriate. All unsold items must be removed by the owner at the end of the evening.

In a previous post, I posted a picture of the recent fire in a Kingston Tower Block Fire, I subsequently received an email from Getty Images inviting me to be a contributor and to negotiate a license for the image of the fire. This demonstrates the value of the images we take and the way Flickr can be used as a commercial tool .  Flickr and Getty Images

BBC - BBC Radio 4 Programmes - Picturing Britain, Street View

Street photographer Nick Turpin is worried about recent changes in the anti-terror laws. According to him, you can now be arrested simply for taking pictures on the streets. He himself has been stopped and searched many times by the police and has had several legal warnings. It comes with the territory he says. Adil joins him at work on the streets of central London as he reflects on the impact of this new legislation on his life.

Nick Turpin is a London based Street Photographer. Nick founded and co-runs the international street photographers group in-public. Nick is the publisher of the biannual street photography periodical PUBLICATION. Nick is a campaigner for the protection of the right of photographers to make pictures in a public place.

The Photographers' Gallery | The Family and the Land: Sally Mann

The Photographers' Gallery The Family and the Land: Sally Mann

18 June - 19 September 2010 The work of American photographer Sally Mann is deeply rooted in both her family, and the landscape she lives and works in. This exhibition, her first solo-show in the UK, draws on several powerful photographic series from throughout her long career that reflect these influences.

Sally Mann (b.1951, USA) first came to prominence for Immediate Family (1984 – 94), a series of intimate and revealing portraits of her three young children Emmett, Jessie and Virginia. Taken over ten years, Mann depicts them playing and acting to camera in and around their homestead in Virginia. Capturing their childhood in all its rawness and innocence, both this and the later series Faces were born out of a collaborative process between mother and child.

Changing focus to the landscape close to her home, the series Deep South (1996 – 98) draws on significant locations from the American Civil War. The photographs are ghostly lit and covered with delicate marks and drip trails – a result of using antique cameras and processes which Mann relishes – that imbue them with a sense of time suspended.

The most recent series in the exhibition, What Remains (2000-04), brings together both of the earlier strands. Facing us are beautifully realised portraits of decomposing bodies returning to the land, photographs taken at a research facility in Tennesse. Dealing directly with the social taboo of death, Mann treats this subject with sensitivity, encouraging us to reflect on our own mortality and place within nature’s order.

The Family and the Land: Sally Mann at The Photographers’ Gallery is an edited version of a touring exhibition, conceived by Sally Mann in collaboration with Hasse Persson, Director, BorĂ¥s Museum of Modern Art, Sweden.

Harrier at Tate Britain side view

Taken at the Tate Britain Canon 40D. Quote from the Guardian "Tate Britain's 2010 Duveens commission, is an ambitious new work by the artist Fiona Banner that challenges the aesthetic and physical expectations of the neoclassical Duveen galleries"

My Canon 40D error 99

My camera developed a fault with a error code 99. Thankful that this happened when I was not away, so I was able, to take the camera to Fixation in Vauxhall London.

I was impressed with the service and quick repair just on a week. Camera now back with me fixed. I recommend Fixation and will use them again if needed.
